first impressions; insa-dong

Now comes the big day – when I met with a friend of a friend in Korea. I didn’t know Brooke, but I knew her sister from Taiwan, and so I went out on a limb and asked if we could meet up. I didn’t know what I was expecting, but it was a fantastic day. I cannot describe how happy the experience was. She was an amazing tour guide and has become a dear friend. (Although she did insist on making me walk up hills and down hills, cheerfully acknowledging the duress while being totally immune to it…out of shape me, meanwhile, gasping and sweating…)

We met at Gangnam station. Huh. I won’t even say it. Just know I’m thinking it and restraining myself.

From there we headed to Insa-dong, a beautiful little neighborhood with handcrafts, pottery, and…poop cafes? Apparently.

I don’t know what it is with poop, but it’s dearly loved by cafes and small children. I can’t even…just….whyyy?

One thing I really loved about Insa-dong was that every flat surface was covered in signatures, or, as in the case above, KPOP love. Discourage random graffiti by making it intentional and you create a work of art.

This was an area where you could purchase one of these little disks and hang it among the others. There must have been thousands. It was a neat effect.

So, that was Insa-dong. I saw a lot of stuff I wanted to buy, but it was pretty pricey and I wasn’t sure the pottery would survive the flight. Another time.

>>Coming next; a Hanok village, the world’s best chocolate, and a palace…
